iPhone 4S Review

The iPhone 4S was unveiled by Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino to an almost unanimous shrug of disappointment by the entire online tech community, myself included. It was a little disappointing to see no major external design change from the iPhone 4 after the so called "leaked case designs" for the fabled 5th generation of Apples flagship handheld device kept surfacing online, however after hearing Phil Schiller and Scott Forstall describe in great detail how the iPhone 4S is better than the iPhone 4 in every way, I am inclined to agree with them, for the most part, I explain below.

External Hardware

I can understand why Apple have stuck with the external antenna and glass design, the form factor is great, it is light and comfortable to hold and lets face it, Jonathan Ive and the rest of the designers at Apple have spent too much time, money and effort to drop this design after one iteration of the iPhone. The only difference in the external design of the 4S from the iPhone 4 is that the antenna is the same one used in the Verizon iPhone 4 which had been modified slightly to attempt to fix the signal issue that the iPhone 4 was infamous for. Incase you haven't noticed the difference, the GSM iPhone 4 had 2 black notches on the bottom left and bottom right of the antenna and one just to the right of the headphone jack whereas the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S have 4 black notches on the bottom and top of the device on the left and right sides.

Internal Hardware

Now here is where the iPhone 4S really sets it self apart from it's baby brother, the iPhone 4.
It features the dual core, 1GHz A5 chip that first debuted in the iPad 2 which makes for greatly improved performance. Apps load quicker, web pages render faster and there seems to be almost no lag or slowdown when trying to perform processor intensive tasks. The processor is also more energy efficient than the A4 chip found in the iPad and iPhone 4, with slightly improved battery life when making calls, using apps or web browsing over 3G. Although inexplicably, the iPhone 4S loses an hour of battery when browsing the web over wifi.

Apple have also greatly improved the antenna this time around. The 4S intelligently switches between the two antennas meaning the signal is greatly improved and coupled with the new processor, the download speed on 3G is massive! On my previous phone, the iPhone 3GS I would average out at .9Mb per second, with the iPhone 4S however, I now get 2.9Mb per second. In addition to this, I get 3G coverage in more places than I ever could with the 3GS.

The place where the upgrades to the 4S really shine through is the camera.
It now sports an 8 megapixel sensor and will shoot video in 1080P full HD. Below are some test shots I took with the camera.

Colours really stand out and up close shots look more detailed than ever. I am however a little disappointed that the front facing camera has had no upgrade at all since the iPhone 4 and it is a little alarming that there is no way to choose which resolution you would like to shoot video in, it just shoots in 1080P whether you want it to or not meaning if you film a lot of video you may find the storage on your phone running out quickly.

The only thing I really dislike about the internal hardware is that it still has 512MB of RAM which for I high end smart phone in 2011 is a little disappointing.

Software

I am not going to go through the finer points of how awesome or not iOS 5 is(I'm looking at you, Reminders), that's for another review. I am however going to talk about one software feature that is(for now) exclusive to the iPhone 4S and that is the personal voice assistant, SIRI.

Basically you can ask SIRI whatever you like and it will do it's best to answer you, ask it to set an alarm, ask what the weather is going to bel like, ask it to remind you to pick up some bread on the way home and SIRI does it's best to provide you with the information you need. It uses the in-built apps on your phone and Wolfram Alpha to get all the information it requires to work. It's conversational so you don't have to speak really clear for it to work what you are saying and it takes into account context, it will remember what you were talking about and give answers to subsequent questions based on that. As great as SIRI is though, it is far from perfect.
It is only available in US, UK and Australian English, French and German and it can only search for places and businesses in the US for now. Maybe integrating yell.com for UK users will solve this but who knows? Its in beta at the moment and there are still many many bugs that need ironing out.

Summary and Should you Buy?

In short, there are some great features on this phone for new and old iPhone customers alike but if you've already got an iPhone 4 there aren't too many major differences to make this an essential purchase, you could consider it if you were at the end of your iPhone 4 contract but if you're not, just wait for the iPhone 5. It is however a huge step up from the 3GS making this an essential upgrade if you were looking at a new smartphone after your iPhone 3GS.

This phone is by no means perfect but it is phenomenal at what it does; it creates an wonderful and engaging iOS experience.

Hov keeps the classic album covers up front and the not so great album covers near the end, with the exception of American Gangster which he finishes with.

This would have been even better if the covers had been in chronological order but still.

Last time I posted a download link for a Jay-Z track the RIAA filed a copyright claim against my blog, so what I did instead is upload the track to YouTube and post it here instead.

Anyway, this is crap, Timbaland’s adlibs clutter up the terrible beat, Jay-Z’s flow is horrible and Drake only raps the verses, I expected a lot more from Jay and Drake and I’m not a fan of Timbaland(mainly because of the awful adlibs).

Not good Jay, not good at all.

I love this advert!

Watching this makes me wish it was 1993 and I live in LA. Sadly it’s 2009 and I’m living in the UK, oh well, I can still play San Andreas and pretend I’m in LA in the mid-nineties.

Nike did a really good job on this video, it’s so relaxing to watch and well shot and directed. Nike have a history of making great advertising and this is one of the adverts Nike would be proud to call theirs.

Check out some other classic Nike commercials.

The last one makes me extremely jealous, I could practice and practice and not do half of what these guys do.

As a general rule, Hip Hop movies suck.

Well that’s a little harsh, Hip Hop movies suck compared to Wildstyle, the original and best Hip Hop movie.

This looks good though, the UK has never made a Hip Hop movie before though so this may turn out just like Kidulthood but with rapping in. This is a small clip of the upcoming Hip Hop movie; Day 1, set in and featuring Birmingham MC’s. I shall be keeping close eye on where this movie is going and post the official trailer when it drops.

Koopa released Mixtape Messiah 7 Disk 1 yesterday but I decided I wasn’t going to post both disks seperately and just waited till both were released. Well here they are, this is Chamillionaire’s first free online mixtape, disk 1 sounds pretty good. Chamillionaire is nice on the mic, he’s probably one of the best MC’s to come out of the south in a few years and that definitely shows with this mixtape.

This mixtape was released as a download on iTunes but it seems someone saw sense and allowed people to download it for free. Paying for a mixtape in this day and age is crazy, the mixtape game has changed from what it was a few years ago. It’s just not possible to charge for a mixtape anymore, not when you can get 15 Charles Hamilton mixtapes for free. Curren$y tried to charge for his “This Ain’t No Mixtape” album/mixtape and precisely 9 people bought it. Anyway, mixtape rant over(or maybe not, I might make a post dedicated to the changing mixtape game).

Now to the matter at hand.

I’m a fan of Nipsey, he makes very good music. Gangster rap may be played out now but he seems to be bringing it back(come on, he made a Kriss Kross sample sound thug LOL). I haven’t had a chance to listen to the mixtape yet but I definitely will be listening to it later.

At The Movies With Gooderz – The Taking Of Pelham 123

So I went to see The Taking Of Pelham 123 today. Good film, one of my favourite actors; Denzel Washinton plays the lead role and co-stars along side John Travolta playing a regular guy caught in an irregular situation. John Travolta’s character takes a New York subway car full of people hostage and wants 10 million dollars for the peoples safe return. Overall its a great film, Denzel and John have great on screen chemistry(even though they don't actually have a scene together until the final few scenes), they’re both excellent actors doing what they do best. The entire film is shown in real time, a technique rarely used but when it is used it works very well.

This is a great movie, great acting and a gripping story. Theres no spectacular special effects, no crazy plot twist, like I said earlier; just a regular guy caught in an irregular situation. This is a must see and probably one of the best films of the year.

Artist Profile: Kooley High

This is the start of many artist profiles. In these I’ll just be giving you the heads up on Hip Hop artists that are set to do big things in the next few months/years.

The first artist profile is about an upcoming group from North Carolina called Kooley High.

Kooley High consists of three MC’s; Charlie Smarts, Tab-One & Rapsody, producers Foolery & The Sinopsis and the DJ; DJ Ill Digitz.

They released an 8 track EP called The Summer Sessions in early 2008 to critical acclaim. The EP is filled with incredible soul sample filled production and even better rhymes, the EP(with guest production by 9th Wonder) showcases what this group is all about; fun filled but serious Hip Hop. These guys wouldn’t look out of place if you took them out of 2009 and placed them in 1993; surrounded by A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul and The Pharcyde, they would easily hold their own ands show their diversity.

The track from Summer Sessions EP that really emphasizes their skill as rappers and producers is Too Late….

Their first full length as a collective is due out in 2010 but in 2009, the MC’s have a number of solo projects in the works

Details are scarce at the moment, all everyone knows is that he died today, I shall post an update once more information has leaked.

Now I’m not going to claim that I’m a fan of Slum Village, I know very little about this group and the Detroit Hip Hop scene as a whole. All I know is that Hip Hop as a culture and a genre has suffered great loss over the years and Baatin can sadly be added to the long list(that also includes ex-Slum Village producer/MC J Dilla, ) If your a fan of Slum Village keep bumping their music and keep supporting underground Hip Hop, if your not, go out and get some Slum Village and enjoy listening to some good music. I’m in the latter and shall be blazing their back catalogue on my iPod tommorow.

Its good to learn about artists new and old but its depressing that I should get into their music under such sad circumstances.

After numerous delays and the inevitable leak, this album was shelved indefinitely. You’ve got to remember, this album was meant to come out in 2007. Well Ja decided enough was enough and teamed up with DoeDolla to officially release the album online today, for free. Eminem & Mariah Carey – A History Of Beef

Since Eminem released a brutal diss track targeting Nick Cannon and his wifey I thought I’d chronicle how this unusual beef started.

It all started when, after a few years of hostility between Em and Mariah after their alleged 11 month relationship in 2001, a track surfaced that appeared on Eminem’s latest album Relapse called Bagpipes From Baghdad which had a few lines taking shots at Mariah….

…..which caused Nick Cannon to write a heeeeyuuuge rant on his blog saying how he’s gonna destroy Eminem and goes on to call him a racist, the blog post culminates in Nick promising he’s, God forbid, gonna start rapping again.

After that all was quiet for about a month until Mariah released the video for Obsessed where she mocks Eminem and takes a few shots at him herself…

…then all was quiet again as the Hip Hop world waited on Eminems response and finally, a month after Obsessed dropped, Eminem released The Warning which absolutely tears Mariah and Nick apart. Its not very difficult to say who won this one, Eminem murdered this, this isn’t Nas vs. Jay, this is an incredible MC against an incredibly easy target showing the world why he is one of the best to ever do it.

Tron Legacy Trailer

I tried to post this yesterday but embedding was disabled on pretty much all the trailers but I just found a video with embedding enabled, anyway, i digress.

This looks incredible, visually it’s on another level compared to this years most CGI heavy film; Star Trek. Don’t know much about story though so it may just be another Transformers; all visual effects, no story. The soundtrack is being handled by the electro duo Daft Punk so it will most likely be in keeping with the visual style of the movie.This film is out sometime in 2010.

Windows 7 – The Negatives

So like I said in my last post I would post all that is wrong with Windows 7 and the truth is; there isn’t much wrong with it. I’ve only found one problem and it is a major one: Drivers!!!!!!!

Although Microsoft have stated that all the Vista drivers will work with 7 I had trouble installing the drivers for my HP F380 printer, I had to resort to running the driver installation in Windows Vista compatibility mode which I’m assuming, the average user won’t know how to do. I guess this problem will be sorted closer to the October 22nd release of Windows 7 but the driver issue in Windows Vista was what put many off using the operating system.

The only other issue I had with it was a driver problem installing something called LIBUSB to allow me to jailbreak my iPod. Once that was installed and my computer was restarted everything was working OK till i tried to shutdown; on the shutdown screen windows blue screened saying there was a Windows device driver error. Every time I shutdown or restarted window it blue screened on the shutdown screen, I uninstalled LIBUSB and everything was fine. Also the second problem I had that was blue screen related, I downloaded a Windows Media Player theme, ran the installation and it blue screened, I solved that issue by restoring Windows 7 to a previous point in time and it now works OK.

Other than those 3 issues I haven’t had a problem with Windows 7 and I recommend every Vista user upgrade.

Also on another driver related note, many companies have already released Windows 7 drivers(most notably Nvidia). Also ATI are preparing for the September release of DirectX 11, no word on the Nvidia release of it though.

Recently I made the transition from Windows Vista to Windows 7 because Vista was driving me absolutely insane. I’ve been checking out all the feature available in the release candidate and I’ve got to say, it works well, very well in fact. The release candidate has pretty much all the features built in that Microsoft have promised will be in the retail version(except virtual pc which can be downloaded from the Microsoft website), the new tab system, shake to minimize and the ability to snap a window to the edge of the screen all feature and work really well.

The design of Windows 7 is based on up and coming multi touch screen technology so everything is a little chunkier to cater for fat fingers the world over.

The whole focus of the Windows 7 GUI is the new taskbar; chunkier and based around the new tab system which is really easy to get used to, if you open more than 1 window to an individual program they all get moved to one tab that starts to glow orange. To get a mini preview of a window, just hover over the tab, to get a full screen preview, hover over the mini preview. The desktop icon has been replaced with a bar next to the system tray which, if you hover over you get a full screen preview of the desktop.

Windows Aero has been tuned up, the taskbar and toolbar now stay transparent when the window has been maximised. Aero also seemingly now requires less system resources to run as Aero is available on all versions of Windows 7.

The gadgets that were introduced in Windows Vista have had an overhaul, the gadget bar has been removed completely and now gadgets go straight on to the desktop and can be resized.

But the most important feature of Windows 7 is the ability to turn off the User Account Control warnings on a user by user basis. It was the worst feature of Vista and for Microsoft to make the option to turn off the warnings is an absolute Godsend.

All in all Windows 7 is an absolute necessity for Windows XP and Vista users, it just works, that’s all anyone ever wanted in an operating system from Microsoft and finally, after 30 years of making computer software they have made an operating system that users will be happy to install on their computer.

Soooooo, Microsoft are releasing a new operating system 3 years after the epic failure that is Vista. From 15th July to 9th August Windows 7 is available on pre order at £49.99 for the Home Premium version and £89.99 for the Professional version. If you buy it on the October 22nd launch you will have to pay full whack though so get them pre orders in quick.
